Purpose: This study was to evaluate near visual acuity in astigmatism with pseudophakic eyes and to examine the influence of uncorrected astigmatism on near visual acuity.
Methods: 100 subjects (185 eyes) from 39 to 86 years old after cataract operation were surveyed. subjective and objective refractions were tested, and near and far visual acuity were measured to pseudoaccommodation for pseudophakc eyes. Jin¡¯s near visual acuity card was used to measure near visual acuity by pt(point, size of letter).
Results: Near visual acuity of corrected astigmatic eye was 13.12¡¾3.57pt for against-the-rule (ATR), 12.32¡¾2.20pt for with-the-rule(WTR), 12.34¡¾2.22pt for oblique astigmatism, and there were no significant differences(p=0.184). Near visual acuity of uncorrected astigmatic eye was 9.67¡¾2.84pt for ATR, 9.26¡¾2.04pt for WTR, 11.75¡¾2.51pt for oblique astigmatism, and there were no significant differences between uncorrected ATR and WTR astigmatism(p=1.000), but there were significant differences between uncorrected oblique and ATR astigmatism, uncorrected oblique and WTR astigmatism(p<0.05).
Conclusion: There was no benefit of oblique astigmatism but there were improvements of ATR and WTR astigmatism to uncorrected near visual acuity in pseudophakia. So we suggest that ATR and WTR astigmatism may work to stimulate pseudoaccommodation at near by Hangul letters.
